'I think they need bigger icons': Interface of Illinois DMV computer stuns internet

Sometimes simplicity is what gets the job done.

Government agencies in the US and indeed around the world are not exactly known for being paragons of efficiency. Most of the time, we simply have to put up with their quirks because they are kind of in charge of us being part of society as we know it. Like millions of other people, we just have to deal with them grudgingly.

Generally speaking, these institutions are the kind that we love to hate, even if we do see the point in them existing. It is basically a rite of passage of adult life to have a bad experience with one or several of them at some point. You don't have to be Elon Musk-level crazy to think that there are maybe certain ways in which they could be improved.

For this reason, it is actually kind of interesting to get a peek behind the scenes at how these organizations function, or at least pretend to. If you have ever been on the receiving end of frustrating service, it can be kind of comforting to feel like you have more of an understanding of how it happened. It doesn't mean that it's going to be better next time, though.

Of all the government agencies, the DMV is probably one of the most notorious when it comes to being a place that nobody wants to be. The long wait times alone are enough to turn a reasonable individual who values being polite to those providing a service into a raging monster once they are at the front of the line.
Still, that makes the place all the more intriguing when it comes to understanding its inner workings. Why is it that even the most seemingly straightforward task gets turned into an endless and inefficient nightmare? There has to be a legitimate reason.
A customer felt like they had gleaned an interesting, if slightly cryptic, insight when they saw the way that the screen of a DMV computer was arranged. Showing several different applications with extra-large icons, some people felt like this picture spoke a thousand words on the topic of trying to renew a driver's license.
